Reviewed by on 20 Nov 2009Boxes is a simple yet addictive arcade game with one aim: to climb as high as possible without getting hit by a falling block. You control a simple square, that can move both left and right and jump. Sounds easy no? With this square, you must avoid the blocks, pick-ups and explosives which fall from the sky. Using these blocks you can climb higher and higher until, your time comes...or you miss-judge a heroic jump and land smack bang into explosive!
From the moment you open the game, you see a loading bar which doesn't reveal much about the game, but is easy on the eyes. The menu is well made, smooth and looks pretty slick, and is easy to navigate without confusion. The game's graphics are simple squares, but when squares land on the floor they seemlessly merge into one another which looks great after a few minutes of playing. Also the game is fast paced and concentrates more on the gameplay side rather than the visuals, so once the game has started you forget entirely about the look and concentrate more so on staying alive, which at the end of the day is quite key to progressing in the game!
"Boxes" has three playing modes: 'Classic' where you must try to get as high as you can to get the most points possible; 'Survival' where you gets points for every few seconds of living and rather than normal gameplay you just have to avoid wave after wave of falling blocks and explosives rather than the random placements, and 'Extreme' where both modes are pretty much combined. This adds to the replay value, and makes you want to get the high scores in each.
The isn't much of a selection of music or SFX, but what's there is sufficient. The game has a speedy background music to add to the faced paced gameplay, and has suitable effect noises for jumping, waves, blocks etc.
Gameplay is smooth, no real unexpected jerks by the player controlled sqaure, it does exactly as it is told! By checking the 'Extras' selection on the main menu, you will find some achievements that you can earn in game, along with four unlockables, which also greatly adds to the replay value of the game.
Overall a fun, good looking game with no real bugs or errors that will make you want to play it over and over until you've climbed the pixel equivalent of Mt.Everest! Featured game on Yoyogames and quite deserved too. A must play for arcade fans, or action fans!
